How do I train for my Everest Base Camp Trek?

What do I need to train for?

Training for the Everest Base Camp Trek is very important as it gives you the highest possible chance of reaching your goal by making the trek more comfortable, by giving you a good base level of fitness.

The trek takes around 10 days at just over 90km long. You will trek through the Khumbu Valley from Lukla all the way to Everest Base Camp. The trail consists of Well-trodden,  rocky paths before culminating with a section of glacial moraine as you get close to Base Camp. You don't need any technical equipment such as crampons or ropes.

If you already are regularly hiking in the UK and are used to carrying a lightly weighted backpack in addition to exercising 2/3 times a week, then you will find this trek fairly manageable. If this is not you, then don't fear, as we can support you every step of the way with your training to support you on your journey to becoming trek fit, ready for the adventure ahead!

You do not need to be an athlete or run marathons to reach Everest Base Camp, but you will find the trek a lot more manageable if you are comfortable and have experience with carrying a day rucksack with around 4 to 5 KG of weight in it, such as your water bottles, snacks, spare layers, jacket, hat, etc. Your bulky and main luggage will be carried along the trail by porters, which is a massive weight off your shoulders.

During the trek, we walk at a slow conversational pace to maximise your body's chance to acclimatise and to avoid getting out of breath as much as possible. You will be surrounded by breathtaking landscapes, flourishing forests and rushing rivers, so take the time to enjoy what is around you, take pictures and immerse yourself in the Himalayas. The distance walked each day is fairly short, but as we take a slow pace, you will be trekking for around 5 to 8 hours a day with ample stops for breaks, lunch, interactions with the community and pictures. Elevation-wise, you will gain an average of around 300 to 600m of elevation per day.

How do I start my preparation?

The best way to start preparing for your Everest Base Camp Trek is to start regularly walking outside, whether that be a loop of your local country park, a few laps of your local town or by getting out to some hills. The more time you can spend outdoors, the better you will feel on the trail. Whilst out on these walks, carry a 25 to 35L rucksack with you, preferably the rucksack you will be using on the trail, so that you can get used to how the bag feels on your shoulders and hips and build up mileage on your feet whilst carrying a bag. As you develop through your training, we recommend you progress this by adding items to your rucksack that you will be carrying on your day-to-day basis to practise carrying the weight of your daily trekking kit.

If you have access to a gym or a small area at home, then we highly recommend doing some exercises with light weights, focusing particularly on your legs, as these will be the primary muscles powering you through your trek. To accompany all of these activities, you should be getting out in the hills as much as possible. This will ensure that your trekking boots are well broken in and our comfortable for the trek rather than finding out mid-trail that they don't fit properly or rub. The foundation of your training needs to include exercises that focus on improving your cardio endurance and strength. Your training needs to start at least 3 months before your departure day and be a gradual increase in load, starting from around one long walk a week week lasting for a few hours, to long hikes in the hills. You want to put yourself in a position where you are happy walking 5 - 6 hours a day. If you live in a fairly flat area and do not have easy access to hills, then a couple of hours on the treadmill and/or stepmaster is a great way of simulating long hikes on inclined terrain.

Our recommended Training Programs:

Outdoor training program – do this twice a week

  1. Long hikes in the fresh air in a variety of weathers and temperatures

  2. Gradually increase the duration of your walks so that you can walk 5-6 hours with minimal rest.

  3. Experience walking on uneven terrain and up and down hills as much as possible.

  4. Wear the footwear you’ll have on the trek and practise with your daypack too.

Gym-based  training program – do this twice a week

  1. 45 minutes on a treadmill with the incline increasing over the course of your training.

  2. 10 minutes stair-stepping machine at 30-45 steps per minute.

  3. 5 minutes flat walk at a slow and steady pace.

  4. Repeat this three times every session, and slowly increase the duration of each activity.
